It had been raining the whole day and the surrounding temperature was somewhat cold.

The thoughts of having nice, warm food came into our find when Tam Ciak suggested that we tried some spicy, hot Taiwanese food since we didn’t want to have dinner under rainy weather at Wai Sek Kai as initially planned.

Restoran Toipark Village is a Taiwanese restaurant at Chai Leng Park located at the parallel street next to Wai Sek Kai. It is directly opposite the morning market and same row as Leng Gaik Hokkien Mee.

Tam Ciak has been a regular patron to this restaurant and now he is recommending it to us. Well, not quite recommending but challenging us to the specialty of this restaurant.

What kind of specialty, you may ask. It is actually spicy hot pot and its variant sour and spicy hot pot.

The hot pot looks something like steamboat but the soup is chili based and red in color. The pot is heated up using solid fuel to keep the soup warm throughout the servings.

Be careful, the sight of red colored chili soup may intimidate you…hehehe.

However, if you enjoy spicy food, you will like it and perhaps looking forward to enjoy it as well. You may end up sipping the soup till it is empty. Still, if you dare and have extra high tolerance for spiciness, you can ask for more chili from the lady boss…Even the one from Kocha is not as spicy as this one.

The other dish that you should order is stinky beancurd (chau tau fuh), yes, the famous stinky tofu that quite enjoyed by Hongkies. The Taiwanese version is not as stinky as the Hong Kong version but they are equally good. This is another of Tam Ciak’s favorite every time when he dines here.

We ordered few other dishes like seaweed, kim chi, dumpling and crispy chicken strips and found them just as tasty. This meal was quite fulfilling but we did find our stomachs working extra hard and feeling kind of hot, possibly from the spicy hot pot we took. But it’s worth the meal to have on rainy days.

It was almost lunch time when Fei Fei suddenly got a call from an ex-colleague saying he was nearby our area and wanted to have lunch with us.

Being indecisive we are especially selecting the place to eat, we asked our ex-colleague to think of a place when he picked us up then.

Almost instantly, he mentioned that he missed the koay teow th’ng at Sungai Nibong, so off we went.

The koay teow th’ng stall is located at the corner lot kopitiam, facing the main road and opposite Avercafe.

There are two types of koay teow th’ng; one is where the koay teow is rinsed with boiled water and soup poured into it after all ingredients (usually cooked upfront) put in and the other is the soup is cooked together with the ingredients. This stall is the latter type.

The bowl of koay teow th’ng served here usually comes with egg unless you opt out. You will also get cooked minced meat (bak chor), fish ball and lard (bak eiu). You can taste the difference between this one compared to the first type. It has stronger aroma and tasted better too.

The small bowl costs RM2.50, medium at RM3.00 and the largest one costs RM4.50.

By the way, while enjoying the koay teow th’ng here, you can also try the roti panggang stall nearby. It is quite unique and has been featured in 8TV’s Ho Ciak food series before. The Chu Cheong Fun and Yam Cake also nice, can give it a try while waiting for the koay teow th'ng.

Hai Boey Seafood - Gertak Sanggul

As what criz lai mentioned earlier in previous seafood posting, you normally need an occasion to drive this far to enjoy seafood.

Well, the last time we celebrated a friend’s birthday at Hao You seafood, this time it was to celebrate my birthday instead…

yes yes it is tam ciak’s birthday treat :D

We decided to have seafood again as our seafood craving still high and we have not got enough of yummy seafood. Forget about cholesterol for the time being lor :P

Penang Food, Seafood, Hai Boey, Hai Boi, Gertak Sanggul

It was Friday evening when we went there and not all tables were full. It was warm yet breezy so we didn’t feel stuffy. The order was taken quite fast the moment we settled on a table. But arrival of the dishes was not that fast.

We ordered about 7 dishes in the first round and there seemed to be some disconnect between the time served on the dishes. It is like we finished the food in first half, half time break and continue again in second half.

We did not order the infamous claypot fish but instead ordered a Thai style steamed fish.

Surprisingly, the waitress came back to us asking if we can change our steam fish to claypot fish with the reason that they have mixed up the order.

Penang Food, Seafood, Hai Boey, Hai Boi, Gertak Sanggul

It’s strange to me as cooks will normally prepare the dishes per items ordered.

The portion served was comparatively small for 6 adults and 1 kid. Imagine you have Penang Tua Pui ready to put everything down the stomachs. :P

Penang Food, Seafood, Hai Boey, Hai Boi, Gertak Sanggul

Honestly, we didn’t feel full after the servings and decided to order 2 more dishes to fill the stomach. I could tell you we barely feel full…

Later when we enquired the waitress taking our orders, she told us she made the servings meant for 3 people only…. Aiyah, why so gau gau one?? (pretend to be smart) Look at our size and you would have guessed we are big eaters mah…. Geram-nya!!!

Penang Food, Seafood, Hai Boey, Hai Boi, Gertak Sanggul

Food wise, they were indeed fresh especially the steam fish and mantis prawn steamed with eggs.

Again, we had another shock when the steamed fish was only one sided and upon further enquiries, same response was given. Who would actually served the steamed fish one sided only???

The asparagus with scallops are quite delicious and so is the hor fun. The bee hoon and tang hoon are mixed together before being fried, guess this is their own creativity.

Penang Food, Seafood, Hai Boey, Hai Boi, Gertak Sanggul

As for the crabs, seriously we were quite disappointed looking at the sizes. They are considered “S” in size and not bigger than size our palms. The crabs in salted egg did taste marvelous if that is for the compliments.

Penang Food, Seafood, Hai Boey, Hai Boi, Gertak Sanggul

Even though this place is famous and has lots of fans who would insist this place is recommended for seafood, we will still prefer hao you. In terms of service and price, this place is slightly expensive for the same dishes we ordered. Well, if we were to make comparisons, it is better to make apple to apple comparisons.

For us, money spent must be at least equivalent or exceed our expectations to fulfil our appetites. Our trip this round did not make us feel this way.

Perhaps, we should make another trip to give it a chance? Well, that may be some time later… Guess, we have had enough seafood for now 

How to get there?!!

As hosts to our business associates, we were obliged to bring them to taste authentic Penang foods. Besides, the official business purpose here, they have heard a lot about Malaysia and Penang as well, some have been here a few times, some were first timers.

Of course, being friendly and proud Penangites, we were more than happy to show them the delicacies and sumptuous dishes in Penang.

Having lunch outside offices is usually warm and sweaty especially under hot burning sun. We brought our guests to trysa bi” (3 flavored) chicken rice at Jalan Tengah.

The shop is located at the ground floor of a flat, facing Persiaran Mayang Pasir and opposite a mosque. The place is a bit warm but well shaded and good ventilation at surrounding so you will not feel stuffy.

You get choices of roasted chicken, boiled chicken, Chinese sausages and roasted pork as well. You can order just one type or mix them all, we believe this place is called sa bi because most people orders generally 3 types.

The roasted pork sold here has more fat (pui bak), so those who prefer pui bak to lean meat may like them. Well, we do!!! :D

Besides the chicken rice, you can order a side dish of assam fish sold by the economy rice stall beside. The assam fish did serve as a great side dish to the chicken rice.

The price per plate for the chicken rice is between RM3 – RM5+ based on number of choices you ordered. You can pay to the boss directly or just pay the bills on your own.

There is a container with loose change located in front of the stall. Mind you, if you ever think that anyone may just "run away” with the money, the boss has great chopping skills that make them think again and again if they really want to do that….

You become part of them.. awaiting to be chopped....Hahaha
