The other day, we were picking up some business associates at the airport when our US guests said they would like to have some authentic Penang breakfast.

Since we were along Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, the thought of “roti bakar” came into picture but our guests wanted something more authentic, so we dropped by at the coffee shop opposite roti bakar instead.

At this Kedai Kopi Leong Huat Seng, it was still early that not many stalls were actually open for business but we saw a particular stall that has quite brisk business at that time.

Almost every table ordered at least a bowl of Hokkien Mee. Well, you can’t go wrong with the crowd, right?

The hokkien mee is quite typical as the soup or the stock is cooked from shrimp heads and shells.

Thus the taste of the soup is quite sweet due to long hours of cooking those shrimp heads. You will get the regular ingredients like cut shrimps, shredded meat and eggs.

This one is also quite close to the original Hokkien Mee where they put kang kung as part of the ingredients. Do take note next time if the hokkien mee you eat comes with kang kung too.

As a side dish, the stall does have roasted pork as add-on for those who prefer to have them together with Hokkien Mee. Hmmm, maybe what they are missing are “eiu char koay”.

A regular bowl costs RM2.20 while a large one costs RM2.70. This hokkien mee stalls is open from 7.30am till ~11.00am, seven days a week.

bawasah road hokkien mee @ one corner cafe definitely a well known stall and what amazed me is people call in to make bookings!!

this means you can see how successful and popular this stall can be. This is one of the very few stalls that offers booking through phones...

but the waiting time is so long that i still think if you really want to have a good hokkien mee, there are always other alternatives :)

As sue's mention above, the Perak road hokkien mee definitely is top 1 and 2 in Penang. Imagine that their hokkien mee sold out daily around 11am.

If this place sold out, I will choose my second option shop which is in Bawasah road behind Penang Plaza.

Another of my favorite hawker food. I can take that for 5 meals a day too :P Same reason too as before, it's too far for me to try out.. haha.

The one from Bawasah Road was from Super Lai Lai Coffee Shop in Rangoon Road. It's famous as it used rock sugar in the soup and it's more towards the sweet side.

Here are 3 more good ones for your ever curious tummy:

Sing Kang Coffee Shop (opp Pulau Tikus police station) 7am-9am. Normally sold out extremely early. Salty sweet soup base.

Sin Kim Sua Coffee House. Junction of Macalister Road/Rangoon Road coffee shop. 7am-10.30am. Assorted add ons including mantis prawns. Salty sweet soup based.

Kah Pin Coffee Shop. Air Itam Market towards Jalan Paya Terubong. The shop is just before Jalan Kampung Pisang, hidden behind some morning market stalls. 7am-10am. Salty soup based.

Good luck in growing fatter.. haha :P

Actually this restaurant which you are in, at night have 2 nice foods stall.

    1. Char Hor Fun
    2. Seafood and frog porridge

I went there a lot when I am back in my hometown which is Bayan Baru, Penang. Opposide this restaurant is the famous roti bakar dip with 1/2 boil eggs and also seafood bee hoon at night.

Btw thanks for the recommendation...Well I work at Jalan Sg Tiram 2 and I think the hokkien mee is just so so ..... nothing special abt it afterall. btw I would like to recommend one of the nicest and prominent hokkien mee that have passed thru for the 2nd generation is at Swee Kong Coffee Shop in Pulau Tikus. The shop is rite opposite the Pulau Tikus Police Station. But its in the morning till 930am ...very lansi but its worth a visit....
