What activities can you do in Hong Kong besides shopping? Eat, of course!! Years of watching those Hong Kong dramas make you feel like want to experience eating at these shops yourself.

Hey, last time can only look at the scene on the TV set only. This time we were experiencing Hong Kong dining for real!

Our very first stop when we arrived after checking into hostel was this place, Tong Kee Noodles. This shop is located at the front end Ladies’ Street. As the shop name suggested, this shop sells variety of noodles with different flavours and ingredients.

The szechuan zar jiang noodles (炸酱面)was the first to arrive. The portion of minced pork served on this dish was a lot relative to the noodles. The noodles they used were mostly wan tan mee type. The sauce was a bit sweet and you can add the chili to make it spicy. Oh the chili was very spicy till it could make Tam Ciak’s lips swelling like two piece hotdogs after taking them…. Arrrgggh..

The second dish that arrived was fish ball and wanton hor fun (云吞鱼丸粉) which is koay teow th’ng in Penang. This hor fun is one of the specialty dishes sold here. The portion of the koay teow could make three bowls of koay teow th’ng sold in Penang. Wow, first complete meal over here was a big challenge already because we did not know the portion could be that much. The fish ball was home made and much larger in size, bigger than our 50 cents coin.

Next came the pork knuckles with dry noodles (猪手捞面)that look like wan tan mee.

If you ever like pork knuckles, you will be happy to see the portion they give to you and the smell of pork knuckles teasing your taste buds, just like what happened to Tam Ciak’s friend. She was sooooo excited upon when the dish was served~!

The final dish was hor fun with pork in light soy sauce (卤肉捞粉). Tam Ciak had only one comment for this dish, the pork slices were big and juicy!!

They were so thick and much bigger in size that once you put them into your mouth, there was a satisfying feeling of eating pork…Hahaha

The price of each dish over here is typically around HKD20-30 depending on the type.

But, every day, they would have a special offer for certain dish at discounted price for about HKD15 per dish. When we were there, it was the zar jiang noodles being sold as promo item. Also, another specialty dish here is fried fish skin but we did not order it because we were already too full~!!

Whenever you have lunch at air-conditioned food courts or eating outlets, chances are your clothes will be smelly after that, well it is always true 100%.

Still, if there is an attraction to go there for food, we will not mind at all as long as the pros outweigh the cons.

The curry fish head stall at Sunshine Square food court is one of them. Well, of course we are there for the food but we are also there to admire the pretty cooks managing the stall as well.

Hey, we do admire pretty ladies who can cook good meals! lolx

As for the curry fish head, you can opt for fish meat as well if you want. The servings typically come in one big bowl for 3 persons and more. You will get ingredients like fish meat (obviously), lady’s fingers, tomatoes, onions, mint leaves etc.

Penang Food, Hawker Food, Street Food, Curry Fish Head, Sunshine Food Court

I do notice somehow the portions of lady’s fingers are quite generous in the servings. The soup is not that thick compared to Lekker Claypot House but it is equally good. You can also order eiu chai as side order.

The curry fish head costs on average RM8 per persons and the stall operates from 10am till 9pm. Maybe we can call it Leng Looi Curry Fish Head? :P

Super Tanker Belacan Fried Rice

Argghh…. Why always like that one? It was almost time to pack our bags and said “Sayonara” when we received the news that Penang Bridge was congested again.

Da*n~! Tam Ciak kept complaining cannot go back early already. !@#$%^

Since Tam Ciak said he could not go home early, he suggested we went for makan-makan somewhere to fill up the stomach while waiting for traffic to ease…

We didn’t have any decision to have makan-makan but somehow we ended up at Super Tanker by just cruising along…. Auto pilot mode? hahaha

Penang Food, Thai Food, Super Tanker, belacan rice

We ordered belacan fried rice from the Thai stall and lucky for us the waiting time was not that long. Perhaps, the crowd had not built up yet during that time?

The aroma of belacan rice that greeted us was quite fragrant but not too strong.

Penang Food, Thai Food, Super Tanker, belacan rice

The ingredients were put separately on top of the rice consisted of scrambled eggs, chicken, anchovies, slices of mango, onions and lime. You may first need to mix them well before start eating.

The belacan rice smelled better than it tasted, as we thought the belacan put was not enough. We like our foods to be in stronger flavour. Tam Ciak then added quite a lot of sambal to make it better and yes, it tasted better with sambal, matching to the taste we wanted.

The portion is suitable for an average adult but for us, we still have room for some side dishes. The belacan rice cost RM3.80 per plate. Besides this, you can also order pattaya rice, pineapple rice or some other varieties.

Genting Kopitiam Chu Cheong Fun

Today, we purposely ventured further than the regular Bayan Lepas area for something different.

Honestly, we grew bored eating things around here but lunch time was rather limited.. so what choices do we have? Aiyah, for today, never mind lah~!

Finding parking here during lunch time can be challenging as well and it is pretty much packed too. We had to go a few round before finding a spot, phew~!! Stomach playing drums orchestra already. lolx

Genting Kopitiam chu cheong fun: that is our target for today. When we arrived, we could see almost every table has chu cheong fun plate. No doubt this is one of the best chu cheong fun stalls in Penang and some people were purposely here just for it.

The chu cheong fun is quite soft and stretchy. The thickness is just right like koay teow and it will not taste like a lump when you put into your mouth.

Penang Food, Street Food, Hawker Food, Chu Cheong Fun, Choo Cheong Fan, best chu cheong fun at Penang

The chu cheong fun was sprinkled with sesame seeds which produced a bit of fragrance when served to us. But our experienced was that sometimes these sesame seeds could stick at the gap of your teeth which could be uncomfortable. That would be something to pay attention to when you do not take good care of your teeth, like us …

What we like about the chee cheong fun at this stall is the prawn paste used. In fact, this stall is famous for its prawn paste that it is the best we have tasted. It did not smell “chao cho” nor too salty. How did they manage to cover up the smelly prawn paste, was there additional ingredients put inside the paste? Guess, it must be the owners’ secret recipe… hehe

The tnee cheoh was quite thick and creamy. Tam Ciak said the sauce was a little too sweet for him but Fei Fei liked it well. We added some chili too to make it spicy.

A small plate of chu cheong fun costs RM1.70 while the big one costs RM2.50.

This shop is a heaven for dairy product lovers. Everything about this shop has to do with milk. The dessert sold here is milk that had fermented to become like yogurt but they looked more like tau fu fah rather than yogurt.

You can choose from list of varieties available like chocolate, almond, lychee or even the original flavour.

The papaya blended we had was quite unique too, it was a mixture of milk, papaya and ice which tasted like papaya yogurt.

One interesting item we found was, this shop sells a drink which mixes Coke, ginger and lemon. Apparently, we were told it can cure nose blocked and flu. Hahaha, this has got to be something really new.

This outlet is not from Hong Kong but originated from Taiwan. It specialized in assortment of drinks either milk tea based or ice blended based.

The trip to Hong Kong had definitely been sweeter with the patronizing these places to try out the different types of desserts. We wanted to go more places and try out even more desserts but time spent in HK was limited.

Nevertheless, the experience of tasting these desserts struck a question on Tam Ciak’s mind, “Will they bring this to Penang?” Fei Fei will definitely be the first customer and Penang Tua Pui will be frequent customers there…. hehehe
