Jackie Chan, Kowloon, Disneyland, Ocean Park, Temple Street, Dim Sum, Loh Por Peng (Wife Cake). The first thought that definitely comes into mind, Hong Kong~! Yes, yes, this month’s highlights will showcase signature foods from Hong Kong.

Tam Ciak was visiting university mate recently and was taken to tour Hong Kong as well as the opportunity to taste local delicacies and desserts.

First of the series is the introduction of street foods that we have been hearing quite regularly which also quite a normal scene in Hong Kong dramas. Top the list of this street food is the stinky tofu or Chau Tau Foo.

True to its name, this tofu indeed smelt stinky and the “stench” can be sniffed metres away from the stalls. Whether you associate the smell to rubbish bins or blocked drainage or anything smell, Tam Ciak was told the more stinky and smell the tofu is, the better the taste of the Chau Tau Foo.

Indeed, the tofu tasted exceptionally fantastic. It was an experience eating something stinky yet at the same time teasing your tastebuds with its uniquely delicious taste. Tam Ciak went back for few more pieces for few nights, it just so addictive~!

The curry fish ball, beef balls were excellent too. The balls are quite solid in term of ingredients and they tasted quite juicy too. The gravy that soaked into these curry fish balls and beef balls give the strong flavouring which is fabulous.

You can either eat them in a stick or put them in Styrofoam bowls. The culture here is to have these snacks on the go; you can eat them while on the move towards your destination. Of course, you cannot eat inside the MTR or the buses.

We also tried other types like the sausages, squid tentacles, fried vegetables and the taste of them are equally tasty. The street food in Hong Kong shares quite similar zest like Penang hawkers’ food with strong flavouring in its dishes.

However, those foods in restaurant do not share similar traits. The taste can be quite bland and you may need to add your own flavouring. Nevertheless, the dishes are quite unique that identifies themselves with Hong Kong cultures and worth sharing with fellow readers. We will feature the reviews of these foods will be in coming postings. Stay tuned~!

    Jon,

We wanted to put our signature mascot all over the world if we can hahaha~!... Of course, Penang is always heart of our eating satisfaction :):):)

Chau Tau Foo is damn smelly and stinky, but once inside your mouth, the taste is exceptionally good... sounds ironic, right? :)

    Hock Cai,

Penang still cin cia che bik kia ciak.. but it's an experience to venture out and try food in other countries and places.

Food concept for these snacks stalls is like "take and go", choose whatever you want and eat while moving. Maybe the display looks like Vietnamese or Burmese .. but you'll feel more comfortable with the ones in HK.. they're edible ones.... :)

New Kid on the Blog, 550ml jar of faith, CK Lam,

It was my first trip there and i'm lucky because i brought a friend along who did a lot of research about HK before going there. She spent a marvelous effort finding the places to go. Upon touch down, we had a whole list of activities and food items we wanted to taste, without wasting time thinking how to go... My first and best trip to HK~!!

It's really an interesting experience trying the food gourmet in HK. Heard so much about it all this while and felt so excited that I was actually there to try them out. And of course, it's an experience worth bring home to share with fellow readers~! :)

    Market Woo, buzzingbee

it's a wonderful experience if you ever have the chance to go there. The culture and food have their similarities and differences with our local foods. Make a trip there and you'll know what we mean.

As for putting on, well, not too worry if you take MTR and buses. Believe me, all the energy will be used up!!

    hi Dido,

The Chau Tau Foo is indeed one the snacks that I remember till now. Even the smell and taste still fresh in the memory.. The stinkier the tau foo is, the tastier it is.... :p

I'm not sure if there's any more Chau Tau Foo in Penang but you can try the one in Chai Leng Park, Restoran Toipark Village. It is not exactly Hong Kong's style Chau Tau Foo and not that stinky but more towards Taiwanese style... That's the closest we could find to satisfy our taste buds.

    any other inputs from readers?
