Penang Restaurant: Miraku @ G Hotel Jap Food

Penang Restaurant, Miraku Japanese Restaurant, G-hotel, Gurney, Japanese Food

The hunt for Japanese food kept going and going and we were still rally to go for more. Comments from previous postings did tell us that we do have quite large fans of Japanese food lovers in Penang and not just PenangTuaPui.

As such here is what we would like to showcase more about Japanese cuisine in Penang.

This time, our hunt had led us to another hotel (nope, it is not Kirishima at Cititel Penang) but Miraku at G Hotel.

Penang Restaurant, Miraku Japanese Restaurant, G-hotel, Gurney, Japanese Food

Miraku simply means a great place for customers to enjoy great food. Well, dining in a place like this, of course we would expect it to be a great place for PenangTuaPui to enjoy, right?

Penang Restaurant, Miraku Japanese Restaurant, G-hotel, Gurney, Japanese Food Penang Restaurant, Miraku Japanese Restaurant, G-hotel, Gurney, Japanese Food

But before we talked about the food, there was something peculiar that we thought should highlight. Once inside the G Hotel, if you see the sign heading to Miraku restaurant, you can see an all-time familiar icon below the sign.

Penang Restaurant, Miraku Japanese Restaurant, G-hotel, Gurney, Japanese Food

Not that we want to give bad feedback or comment but why the heck do they put “Miraku” and toilet signs together?? You know, the next thought that came immediately, the restaurant is next to toilet??? Phew… luckily it was not.

Penang Restaurant, Miraku Japanese Restaurant, G-hotel, Gurney, Japanese Food

The Miraku restaurant setting was pretty much like Japanese, with those wooden doors, tables and chairs as well as sushi bar. We did notice they had tatami dining only for their private rooms.

Penang Restaurant, Miraku Japanese Restaurant, G-hotel, Gurney, Japanese Food

This restaurant set up was expected since Miraku is under the same management as Sushi King. In other words, their exposure to Japanese culture should be well equipped.

Penang Restaurant, Miraku Japanese Restaurant, G-hotel, Gurney, Japanese Food

Every patron will get a hot towel which you can use to cleanse your face and hand. Some restaurants provided cold towels instead. Nevertheless, this is a kind gesture worth mentioning as you can feel much fresher after wiping your oily face or cleaning your hands.

Penang Restaurant, Miraku Japanese Restaurant, G-hotel, Gurney, Japanese Food

The appetizer given was some preserved nuts that you can chew while waiting for your food to arrive.

Penang Restaurant, Miraku Japanese Restaurant, G-hotel, Gurney, Japanese Food

The cod fish steak was the first to arrive and the smell of grilled cod fish was quite fragrant. We realized the cod fish was slightly shiny than others we had tried, not sure if it was due to the lighting or the chef had done some magic onto it.

Penang Restaurant, Miraku Japanese Restaurant, G-hotel, Gurney, Japanese Food

Perhaps, Miraku had used a much better quality cod fish as well?

Penang Restaurant, Miraku Japanese Restaurant, G-hotel, Gurney, Japanese Food

Sashimi Don came next and we were quite pleased with the set. It was the first time that we encountered sashimi being put on top of the rice and we felt it was quite creative too.

In way, it might look like sushi but it was not. The sashimi was laid on top of the rice and you get a few choices like salmon, tuna, fish roe, prawns etc and it was quite an appetizing presentation.

Penang Restaurant, Miraku Japanese Restaurant, G-hotel, Gurney, Japanese Food

Grilled eel set was next and this was not much difference compared to others. The aroma was delectable and looked tasty. Maybe it was because our stomach already making noise too.. hehehe. The unagi portion was big though we did hope it was a bit bigger. 

Penang Restaurant, Miraku Japanese Restaurant, G-hotel, Gurney, Japanese Food

But they decided not to give too much of good things. Instead, the unagi set actually came with a small plate of assorted sashimi so that you can try different dishes in a set.

Penang Restaurant, Miraku Japanese Restaurant, G-hotel, Gurney, Japanese Food

Sushi and Noodle Zen came at the same time as grilled eel as well. This set had got to be the most fulfilling set of all.

Penang Restaurant, Miraku Japanese Restaurant, G-hotel, Gurney, Japanese Food

You get a bowl of hot noodle soup with seven pieces of assorted sushi.

Penang Restaurant, Miraku Japanese Restaurant, G-hotel, Gurney, Japanese Food

The noodle bowl is smaller than regular one but still have enough punch to make you feel full, though there are limited ingredients inside. The focus had got to be on the sushi  The combination of rice, noodles and soup will definitely make you go full and bloated. This is the set if you intend to “ciak pah pah” (eat till feeling full)

Penang Restaurant, Miraku Japanese Restaurant, G-hotel, Gurney, Japanese Food

The dining experience at Miraku did not let us down and in fact we enjoyed the food served here. Also, since this is more towards high end restaurant, the environment here can be a little quiet except for the sound of chef’s cooking. Another place to come again if wallet is not a concern.. heeheehee 

Penang Restaurant: Soba Yoshi Jap Restaurant

Penang Restaurant, Soba Yoshi Japanese Restaurant, Kristal Point
Seemed like we had been bitten with Japanese fever as our cravings for Japanese foods were so strong that we continued to search for them.

Last week’s hunt for sushi and sashimi was not enough that we wanted to have more. Luckily we had not grew bored with it yet hehehe

Soba Yoshi Restaurant is located at Kristal Point and one of the few Japanese Restaurants along that area such as Yakiniku and Shin Kurumaya.

Penang Restaurant, Soba Yoshi Japanese Restaurant, Kristal Point

The environment for this restaurant was very much like the Japanese type. Not just the exterior or the interior but also the people. Yes, the staffs here could converse in Japanese well which gave you a feeling as if you were in Japan for dining.

It is thus no surprise that this place is a favourite among Japanese expatriates in Penang as it made them feel at home. The staff’s fluency in Japanese certainly helped to boost this restaurant’s image.

Penang Restaurant, Soba Yoshi Japanese Restaurant, Kristal Point

One thing we like about the food served in this restaurant was the freshness of its sashimi. The texture was quite tender and each slice tasted good the moment you put into your mouth.

But we thought the slices could be more since there was only three pieces for the Bento set.

Penang Restaurant, Soba Yoshi Japanese Restaurant, Kristal Point

The sushi set came in five pieces, each with different type of fish. The sushi was quite fresh and being big eaters, we would hope the portion would come bigger… 

The ramen was portion was quite big and fulfilling and the soup was equally good.

Penang Restaurant: Kopitiam Junction

Written on 9:55 PM by Penang Tua Pui

Penang Restaurant, Kopitiam Junction, Old Town, Penang FoodSince the birth of Oldtown Kopitiam, there seemed to be more and more similar type of kopitiam mushrooming around Penang and other states.

Or perhaps, the aggressive marketing of Oldtown Kopitiam made us more sensitive towards any new opening of such outlets. One such outlet is Kopitiam Junction, located at the lower ground floor of Sunway Carnival Mall in Seberang Jaya.

The setting of this place is quite similar with all other kopitiam outlets that you could have mistaken it for the Oldtown Kopitiam if you had not read the sign.

Even the food ordering methodology is quite similar.

Penang Restaurant, Kopitiam Junction, Old Town, Penang Food

Our order of Nasi Lemak came first and the plate looked quite large. Each of the nasi lemak ingredients, ikan bilis, cucumber, salad, chicken curry, sambal and rice was put separately with an egg on top of the rice.

Penang Restaurant, Kopitiam Junction, Old Town, Penang Food

Penang Restaurant, Kopitiam Junction, Old Town, Penang Food

For a RM5.90 plate, this was quite worth the price. The rice was quite fragrant while the ikan bilis was crispy. The sambal was a bit spicy only but tasted sweet while the chicken curry was just right. The portion of the chicken curry was also generous as we got 2 pieces and some potatoes.

Penang Restaurant, Kopitiam Junction, Old Town, Penang Food

Penang Restaurant, Kopitiam Junction, Old Town, Penang Food

The toasted breads were slightly different compared to Oldtown kopitiam. The butter and kaya toasted breads comprised of two slices cut into four pieces. Somehow this arrangement made the breads looked so little.

Penang Restaurant, Kopitiam Junction, Old Town, Penang Food

The peanut butter bread toast was generous in its spread and they also sprinkled some sugar onto it. Depending on your preference, you may choose to like it or not.

Penang Restaurant, Kopitiam Junction, Old Town, Penang Food

The eggs on bread toast were something similar to Oldtown. You will need to eat this fast while it was still hot, else the cold taste of half boiled eggs could be a bit geli.

Penang Restaurant, Kopitiam Junction, Old Town, Penang Food

The white coffee was quite thick and strong, emitting the nice coffee fragrance every time when you take a sip. Aahhh… just like the old style.

The drinks here were quite interesting and adventurous. There was a selection of drinks that incorporated lemon, cucumber, honey, nutmeg etc… We chose cool cucumber with lemon iced drinks and it was quite refreshing.

Penang Restaurant, Kopitiam Junction, Old Town, Penang Food

This place is good as an alternative if you ever feel bored going back to Oldtown again. The price was quite reasonable and we found that certain items were comparatively cheaper than oldtown and bigger in size.

Penang Restaurant, Kopitiam Junction, Old Town, Penang Food

This could be an attraction since money got to be well spent these days. Don’t you think so? 
