This stall has to be one of the
famous char koay teow stalls in
Penang, Ah Leng Char Koay Teow.
There are few indications to that:
the stall has appeared in local Chinese newspaper, the
price of special char koay teow can be equivalent to few plates of normal char koay teow (else how can you charge high price for char koay teow?).

Furthermore the owner puts
his handphone number in case people want to put advance order. And now, this stall is highlighted by
Penang Tua Pui too.
This stall is in front of
Kafe Khoon Hiang along
Jalan Dato Keramat. It is opposite Federal Place where Honolulu café is situated. We noticed that they have an ordering system of how each customer want their
char koay teow to be.
Tam Ciak saw the owner’s daughter scribbling something on the plate as to identify the ingredients and the portion of the char koay teow.
The waiting time was
somewhat long or probably we were just
too hungry waiting for our turn. The portion is enough for one person or maybe less but the ingredients of the char koay teow is
what we were interested in.
Regular char koay teow (
RM4.50 per plate) will give you two big prawns where as the special char koay teow (
RM8 per plate) gives you
4 big prawns and
2-3 pieces of mantis prawns. Add extra RM0.50 if you want duck egg char koay teow.
Though the price is
considered steep for a plate of char koay teow, it is worth the money paid especially when you see
the size of the prawns. They are
big sized prawns, not tiny or normal sized ones. And top that up with
mantis prawns for special order, the
char koay teow is
worth the bucks.
Ah Leng Char Koay Teow is opened daily
except Thursday and from
8am till 2pm. If you are not sure of when is it available or if you want to order in advance, you can call the owner at this number,

Snake temple is one of the
tourist attractions in Penang island, built in 1850 in the memory of the renowned Chinese monk Chor Soo Kong. Just right
opposite the snake temple is a kopitiam where you can find this
char koay teow (char koay tiao) stall.

The
unique thing about the
char koay teow (char koay tiao) here is that the prawns are fried up front in large quantity before being added to the freshly cooked
char koay teow.
Maybe by frying them separately instead of being cooked together with the
char koay teow will maintain the
freshness of the prawns.

This actually reminds us of similar technique used in
Kimberly Street Char Koay Teow where the mantis prawns are also fried separately.
The size of the prawns is
above average and not those small ones you typically get else where. You will get about 3-4 pieces of prawns in each plate. The Char Koay Teow is priced at RM2.70 per plate

Char Koay Teow (char koay tiao) is a local dish usually found in Malaysia and Singapore.
Char Koay Teow literally means fried flat noodles in Hokkien with
Char means “
fried” and
Koay Teow referring to flat noodles.
There are many variations of
Char Koay Teow available but the famous one is no doubt the
Penang Char Koay Teow.
Char Koay Teow consists of flat noodles fried together with prawns, cockles, egg, bean sprouts, Chinese chives and sprinkled with light as well as dark soy sauce which give to its colouring. Sometimes slices of chinese sausage and fish cakes are also included.
Duck eggs are sometimes used instead of chicken eggs too. Those who like it spicy can include chilies as well. The char koay teow is fried with intensely high heat and cooked within minutes.
What makes the
Penang Char Koay Teow special? Well, for one
Penang Char Koay Teow is usually fried using
charcoal fire instead of gas fire. The scent of burning charcoal frying up the koay teow and the banana leaves which are used to place the
koay teow on top of it, give a nice
burnt aroma.
Another key ingredient to delicious char koay teow is lard,
white cooking fat that adds more aromas to the char koay teow.
Trip to
Penang is never complete until you have tried char koay teow and when you have, you will come back for more :)
