Argghh…. Why always like that one? It was almost time to pack our bags and said “Sayonara” when we received the news that Penang Bridge was congested again.

Da*n~! Tam Ciak kept complaining cannot go back early already. !@#$%^

Since Tam Ciak said he could not go home early, he suggested we went for makan-makan somewhere to fill up the stomach while waiting for traffic to ease…

We didn’t have any decision to have makan-makan but somehow we ended up at Super Tanker by just cruising along…. Auto pilot mode? hahaha

We ordered belacan fried rice from the Thai stall and lucky for us the waiting time was not that long. Perhaps, the crowd had not built up yet during that time?

The aroma of belacan rice that greeted us was quite fragrant but not too strong.

The ingredients were put separately on top of the rice consisted of scrambled eggs, chicken, anchovies, slices of mango, onions and lime. You may first need to mix them well before start eating.

The belacan rice smelled better than it tasted, as we thought the belacan put was not enough. We like our foods to be in stronger flavour. Tam Ciak then added quite a lot of sambal to make it better and yes, it tasted better with sambal, matching to the taste we wanted.

The portion is suitable for an average adult but for us, we still have room for some side dishes. The belacan rice cost RM3.80 per plate. Besides this, you can also order pattaya rice, pineapple rice or some other varieties.

Hawker Food: Hutton Lane Koay Teow Th’ng

We used to pass by this place several times but never paid a visit until recently. There are just many great foods and varieties available within the vicinity that always ended up as our meals of choice.

From the outside, we can see the coffee shop is always full of people but then so are most coffee shops in Penang, are they not?

The specialty of this koay teow th’ng is not in the soup, it not in the koay teow but is in the fish ball.

Yes, the koay teow th’ng sold here is known for its fish ball. The fish balls are self made by the owners themselves and of course contain secret recipe that make the fish balls delicious. The fish balls are quite juicy with smooth texture and the ingredients too seemed to have been well blended.

The fish balls are quite elastic when we put it into our mouth, compared to factory made fish balls. Talking about elasticity, Fei Fei said it reminded him of Stephen Chow’s movie “God of Cookery” (Sik San) where there was a feature about special elastic meatball that was used to play ping pong…. lolx

Hahaha. Well, we did not try to play ping pong with the fish ball here, although there was a temptation to do some experiments :P

Huat Koay commented that the koay teow is not to his liking as it breaks easily. He prefers the Ipoh Hor Fun type of koay teow for their smooth texture. If only this stall uses Ipoh Hor Fun together with the fish balls, it will be his favorite koay teow th’ng stall then. Also, the soup is a bit oily so it is good to let the boss know earlier if you prefer less oil.

The bowl of koay teow th’ng sells at RM2.40 per regular bowl and RM3.00 for big bowl. Additionally, you can request to add extra ingredients as you like. This place is open at morning and close on Sunday.

Hawker Food: Guan APONG

Huat Koay, Fei Fei and Tham Ciak. We all love food so much that most of the time, our conversation revolves around food wherever we go.

We do share experiences and places we visits with our families and nice eating places among one another. After that, we will list down places that we should go and review together as PenangTuaPui.

Last week, Fei Fei’s aunt brought some pancakes during her visit to his home. The usual pancake we normally have are like the one featured in Anson Road Ban Chang Kueh or the bigger type that found in Pulau Tikus market.

This one though is much smaller than both of them that we think it is suitable to be XS size.

Guan Pancake or Apong Guan as shown in the sign, is located at Burmah Road. This stall was featured on NST, January 2 this year on Travel Section as you can see from newspaper cutting displayed on the left side of the stall.

It had also been featured in Ho Ciak TV series, no wonder the owner was smiling all the way throughout the photo shoot out.

Despite the small size, this pancake is quite thick relatively given its size. Inside the pancake, you will get slices of banana, teaspoon of corn and also grated coconut. The pancake tasted quite soft and fragrant, not too thick with flour.

Tham Ciak and Fei Fei like this pancake but Huat Koay said the pancake tasted weird because it included grated coconut inside. He preferred to have his pancake without them.

From certain angle, Tham Ciak said the pancake looks like Doraemon’s favorite pancake, dorayaki, mainly because of the protruding middle.

One thing we observed was there were people who called in to make their order and collect them later. Guan told us that these were his regulars who prefer not to wait but instead make order in advance, especially when the queue was long.

Each piece of Apong cost RM0.30 and the stall operates from 9am till 9 pm daily except Sunday.

Hawker Food: Air Itam Curry Mee

This is another classic curry mee stall in Penang which we have grown up throughout our younger days.

Eating curry mee at this place brings back some old memories of our childhood. We try to come back whenever we can for a bowl of curry mee the old style, the old way of squatting by the road side.. hehehe.

Despite so many years, the quality of the curry mee remains as they used to be.

The curry mee stall is at the Air Itam market, next to a small river. The curry mee is managed by two elderly sisters, around 60s or 70s of age. Yes, they have aged over time and they have been there for long time.

All the ingredients are put on the floor instead of any make shift stalls. Their ingredients are all cooked upfront from their home before they bring over and spread out around them.

The curry mee soup is heated up slowly using charcoal pot and served to customers one by one. Oh, by the way, it is easier for you to make your order squatting down as well, not only because it is more convenient but also a respect to the elders, at least we feel it that way.

The curry mee tasted fresh and not too thick or creamy either. The soup itself is not that spicy and you can add extra chili if you want to. You will also get cuttle fish in the curry mee. Besides, curry mee, the lady also sells fried bihun.

The experience of eating curry mee at the place is unique although you can opt to sit and eat on a table. There are limited seating places available but you can sit at opposite coffee shop and get delivered to you by yourself. For those coming here the first time, you will think it is kind of gross and unhygienic that food preparation is done this way.

There is alternative to that as well. The sisters actually have a successor and it is few steps away walking down the street. The successor looks cleaner as they have an actual stall and seating places where you can enjoy the curry mee properly.

Penang Food: One Corner Café Indian Laksa

21

Written on 8:25 AM by Penang Tua Pui

Penang food, Laksa, Bawasah Road, Giant, Burmah Road
Most of the asam laksa stalls in Penang these days are sold by Chinese and typically the asam laksa sold included prawn paste to make it sweet.

With the exception for lemak laksa of course, you will unlikely to find any asam laksa without prawn paste. Still, there are some laksa that do not put prawn paste and one of them can be found behind the Giant supermarket at Burmah road (to be exact it is at end of Bawasah Road).

The laksa is not sold in a stall but rather on a motorcycle which is parked outside One Corner Café, where the famous hokkien mee is located.

Penang food, Laksa, Bawasah Road, Giant, Burmah Road

This laksa is sold by an Indian owner who used to sell it a tricycle, moving from house to house until some years ago chose to be stationary at the present location.

This laksa tasted sour and spicy unlike the Chinese one which is sweet because of added prawn paste. If you like spicy and sour, you will likely to find this type of laksa to your liking. The laksa gravy is not that thick and looks more like curry gravy at the first glance.

Besides laksa, the owner also sells fried popiah and fried beancurd (tau kuah chien) and varieties of kuih like kuih talam and curry puff. We also noticed on surrounding tables that some customers ordered only fried popiah and fried beancurd with the laksa gravy, minus the noodles.

We did order one as well as and they did taste quite nice, the taste of fried popiah soaked into laksa gravy, crunchy and yet moist too.
