Penang Restaurant, Soba Yoshi Japanese Restaurant, Kristal Point
Seemed like we had been bitten with Japanese fever as our cravings for Japanese foods were so strong that we continued to search for them.

Last week’s hunt for sushi and sashimi was not enough that we wanted to have more. Luckily we had not grew bored with it yet hehehe

Soba Yoshi Restaurant is located at Kristal Point and one of the few Japanese Restaurants along that area such as Yakiniku and Shin Kurumaya.

The environment for this restaurant was very much like the Japanese type. Not just the exterior or the interior but also the people. Yes, the staffs here could converse in Japanese well which gave you a feeling as if you were in Japan for dining.

It is thus no surprise that this place is a favourite among Japanese expatriates in Penang as it made them feel at home. The staff’s fluency in Japanese certainly helped to boost this restaurant’s image.

One thing we like about the food served in this restaurant was the freshness of its sashimi. The texture was quite tender and each slice tasted good the moment you put into your mouth.

But we thought the slices could be more since there was only three pieces for the Bento set.

The sushi set came in five pieces, each with different type of fish. The sushi was quite fresh and being big eaters, we would hope the portion would come bigger… 

The ramen was portion was quite big and fulfilling and the soup was equally good.

I used to frequent this place as it's near the FTZ area where I work but as I discover more and more Japanese restaurants in town and around this area, I felt that the food quality and creativity of Sobayoshi is below average. Even a chain Japanese restaurant like Sakae Sushi surpasses it.

IMHO, the best Japanese restaurant that serves the *highest* Japaneses food quality is Kirishima - the Jap restaurant at the lobby of Cititel. Even my Jap expat friends endorse its quality. :D

Go try it if you haven't. Remember to bring your credit card or a BIG bundle of cash. It's not cheap. :|

IMHO is one of the best in Penang, had been there once for celebration with co-worker. Compnay pay the bill so dun know about the price.

Soba Yoshi is consider not bad and quite consistent in term of quality and freshness.

    Eleen Por,

Kirishima no doubt is one of the best Japanese restaurant in Penang, so is the price :) So it is only natural to have high expectations and expect the best from this restaurant, which it has lived up to its name :)

As for Sobayoshi, we do think it's still a good place to patron; it is not cheap, yet it is not too expensive as well.. This is one of the Japanese restaurants to consider if you ever feels like dining Japanese food, without burning big hole in the pocket :)

    Happy dining~!

    KampungboyCitygal,

They've got to come hand in hand. One thing good unlikely to make the other better. So it must be the combination of good food and skilled photography to get the best results..

    don't you think so? :)

  19. Penang Tua Pui |

    Sweet Jasmine,

The price is comparable to other Jap restaurants in Penang. Not really anything expensive.. or maybe we did not order the expensive one?? hehehe

Japanese buffet.. so far Tao is the only place in Penang...

    Guan,

Compared to Sakae Sushi or YakiTeppan or ShinjuTei, this outlet might be a bit expensive but we believe price wise they're comparable to Jurin, Isshin or maybe Akebono...

Sometimes, we just want to try once to get the taste of it... what is it like for premium sashimi or sushi?

If the food is slightly expensive but can make you feel satisfied.. then it's worth the money...(but then hor, don't think much about the hole in the pocket lor... )

  31. Penang Tua Pui |

    Benghan,

Your wife must have liked it a lot and you must have made her smile and happy by taking her to the restaurant. Good for you!

    fwukai quah,

Fuyooooooo~!!!!!! eat sooo much ar??? The list already make us drooling, want to go for Jap food again.. But yours avg RM120 per pax to eat so many things.. and the best some more.. They're FREE~!!!!!!

Eh, next time can we come along or not?? hehehe

  33. Penang Tua Pui |

    Bernard,

Set a target and work on it!!!
Tell yourself you plan to go there soon and start saving lor... hehehe :D

In fact, 1.9k is the company budget, and the food served was by the restaurant suggestion.

i don't think can get so much food with merely RM120 if go with a few people only. you should go with a huge bunch of eaters and tell them to serve based on your budget(of course must be reasonable lah).

aiks suddenly crossed my mind, why dun Tua Pui organise a food hunt day, since Saturday and Sunday there's not much things to do
