Huat Koay, Fei Fei and Tham Ciak. We all love food so much that most of the time, our conversation revolves around food wherever we go.

We do share experiences and places we visits with our families and nice eating places among one another. After that, we will list down places that we should go and review together as PenangTuaPui.

Last week, Fei Fei’s aunt brought some pancakes during her visit to his home. The usual pancake we normally have are like the one featured in Anson Road Ban Chang Kueh or the bigger type that found in Pulau Tikus market.

This one though is much smaller than both of them that we think it is suitable to be XS size.

Guan Pancake or Apong Guan as shown in the sign, is located at Burmah Road. This stall was featured on NST, January 2 this year on Travel Section as you can see from newspaper cutting displayed on the left side of the stall.

It had also been featured in Ho Ciak TV series, no wonder the owner was smiling all the way throughout the photo shoot out.

Despite the small size, this pancake is quite thick relatively given its size. Inside the pancake, you will get slices of banana, teaspoon of corn and also grated coconut. The pancake tasted quite soft and fragrant, not too thick with flour.

Tham Ciak and Fei Fei like this pancake but Huat Koay said the pancake tasted weird because it included grated coconut inside. He preferred to have his pancake without them.

From certain angle, Tham Ciak said the pancake looks like Doraemon’s favorite pancake, dorayaki, mainly because of the protruding middle.

One thing we observed was there were people who called in to make their order and collect them later. Guan told us that these were his regulars who prefer not to wait but instead make order in advance, especially when the queue was long.

Each piece of Apong cost RM0.30 and the stall operates from 9am till 9 pm daily except Sunday.

This is a new al fresco restaurant opened in Penang recently, situated off Burmah Road slightly opposite 1926 Heritage Hotel. This restaurant features village concept dining under attap huts (pondok atap).

There is even a top tiered attap hut which gives you an elevated view of Burmah Road.

Walking into this restaurant feels like a walk in the kampong where the roofs are covered with dry leaves and vintage tools which had found its use for decorative purpose.

The layout and design indeed give you a feeling of going into traditional Malay kampong except for the cement floor and traffic noise outside.

Food quality here is slightly above average, not to say the best but they do serve both oriental and western dishes.

Tom Yam noodle was not really spicy but tasted a bit sweet but the chicken lasagna served comes with generous portion of cheese.

The ikan panggang (ray fish) we ordered was well grilled with the fish cooked without any burnt taste and it comes with two types of sauce, soy based and chilly based. A snack that you should not miss is the cucur ikan bilis, fried anchovies that comes with Thai Chili sauce.

Jemputree! is a nice place to head to if you like to experience open air dining in traditional village environment, something definitely different on Penang dining.
