Most of the
asam laksa stalls in Penang these days are sold by
Chinese and typically the asam laksa sold included
prawn paste to make it
sweet.
With the
exception for lemak laksa of course, you will unlikely to find any asam laksa
without prawn paste. Still, there are some laksa that do not put prawn paste and one of them can be found behind the
Giant supermarket at
Burmah road (to be exact it is at end of
Bawasah Road).
The laksa
is not sold in a stall but rather on a
motorcycle which is parked outside
One Corner Café, where the
famous hokkien mee is located.
This laksa is sold by an
Indian owner who used to
sell it a tricycle, moving from house to house until some years ago chose to be
stationary at the present location.
This laksa tasted
sour and spicy unlike the Chinese one which is sweet because of added prawn paste. If you like
spicy and sour, you will likely to find
this type of laksa to your liking. The laksa gravy is not that thick and looks
more like curry gravy at the first glance.
Besides laksa, the owner also sells
fried popiah and fried beancurd (tau kuah chien) and varieties of kuih like
kuih talam and curry puff. We also noticed on surrounding tables that some customers ordered only fried
popiah and fried beancurd with the laksa gravy,
minus the noodles.
We did order one as well as and they
did taste quite nice, the taste of fried popiah
soaked into laksa gravy, crunchy and yet moist too.

Peng Hwa Laksa is located at
Taman Emas Kopitiam which is opposite
Penang Chinese Girls High School at
Gottlieb Road. This stall is famous mainly with students and working adults within nearby areas.

The
laksa served here has fish broth which is quite thick, full of flavors and coupled with the
heh ko to make it a nice dish of
asam laksa. The stall also sells fried
popiah which you can dip into the soup after you have finished the noodles.
The salty taste of
popiah combined with spicy and sour flavor of
laksa make the
popiah a delicious add on to this assam laksa.

This stall, besides selling
laksa and
popiah, does offer
chai koay too as additional add on to the range of dishes sold. You can choose to have either the mangkuang or kuchai chai koay. They will normally be cut into halves and to be eaten with chili sauce.

The laksa cost RM2.50 per bowl.

Laksa is a spicy and sour noodle soup which has
Peranakan or Baba Nyonya origin. There are few types of
Laksa available like
Penang laksa a.k.a. asam laksa, lemak laksa,
Katong laksa (Singapore) and Sarawak laksa.
Laksa is one of the
most popular hawker dishes in Penang and can be very
addictive despite the strong flavors of fish.
Laksa consists of rice noodles that are poured with hot spicy and sour soup cooked with fish broth, typically ikan kembung (mackerel).
The
addiction of eating laksa lies in its soup where shredded ikan kembung is
cooked for hours until its strong, tangy flavors are obtained.
Additionally,
ingredients such as ginger flower, thai basil leaves, lemon grass, tumeric, pineapple, chilies and asam (tamarind) are also included to laksa.

Another main item which is a must to make the
laksa complete is
prawn paste or heh ko. The combination of prawn paste and fish flavors can easily give people clues if you have just had a bowl of laksa.
