Fei Fei has been telling how nice the oyster mee here tasted and he likes this one compared the one near Town area. Again, we ran out of idea of where to have lunch and this is the nearest to us that time. So off we went to our lunch destination.

This restaurant is located at Sunway Tunas, just next to Ben’s Diner and behind Teow Chew Meng restaurant. It is at the corner lot. This is actually a branch and the main outlet is Jalan Terengganu.

The interior for the branch is smaller compared to the main outlet, fits about 5-6 round tables and 4-5 rectangular tables.

Huat Koay and Fei Fei like to come here for their oyster mee and obviously this is one of our dishes this time too. It is also the first dish to arrive.

The medium size portion can fill 2-3 persons’ stomach. Huat Koay said the oyster mee did not have strong oyster flavour but still tasted good and the gravy tasted just nice.

Next dish was pumpkin chicken. Well, this is quite unique as pumpkin is used and rarely do we see pumpkin dishes or its varieties around. The chicken was briefly fried earlier before cooked together with pumpkin. The pumpkin made a thick, creamy sauce covering the chicken.

Tam Ciak felt the chicken in pumpkin sauce tasted a bit like crabs cooked in salted dried eggs. One thing to note is that this dish tasted delicious while it is hot because once it cools down, the sauce can be sticky and “jelak”.

Spare ribs was the third dish and it was cooked with dark soya sauce. The ribs were quite juicy and tender but quite sweet.

Fried tanghoon (glass noodles) was the fourth dish arrived. Our first impression was, “Why so dark one? The chef overused the soy sauce?” The colour was quite similar to the spare ribs dish we had earlier.

Then we found out our neighbour ordered the same thing and they too had the same thing. The tanghoon tasted sweet as well and surprisingly not salty.

The Four Seasons Vegetables was the last dish to arrive. It contained mixture of 4 types of vegetables fried in sambal.

Then we had another dish which is the soup of the day. Wait, thought we did not order soup this round?? Then the lady explained the soup was complimentary. Wow, that is a good effort to attract customers.

    ck lam,

the soup was a surprise to us as well. We thought the waitress mistakenly put it on our table. It was there for a while with the puzzled looks on our faces before we finally asked. Then she said, "It's on the house" ... Wow, that's really a nice gesture :):)

    hi Hong Beng,Daniel,

so sorry to hear about the service that you and your friend encountered. It is disheartening to know that they treat the guests this way especially towards the closing hours. A softer approach will be applicable and more effective to inform the customers.

We do not want to simply ban the shop due to single incident happenned. We are obliged to report these things out (be it good or bad) and pass the message to the owners. Hopefully, they can take appropriate actions against the waitress for her attitude. Maybe it was the the single person that happened to cause the unhappiness and spoilt you guys' mood that night, but the restaurant as a whole perhaps deserve a second chance. And we did not notice impolite service at the Sunway Tunas branch too.

Still, this is a good point to note on their service level and customer perception...

Just to let you know that there is an adjacent room which could put around 8 big tables.

It is also true that customers could be hurried or chased out at closing time even if you regularly book many tables per time. Therefore, it is not true that you must be polite, friendly, etc to gain customer loyalty, business, etc...

    hi Anonymous,

Do hope you can identify yourself in future postings so that we can address you correctly :)

Also, thank you for letting us know this place has a capacity to host more guests in adjacent room. It should be very big dining area indeed. We didn't venture around to see the overall restaurant but merely observed within our vision of sight.

Regarding the service level and customer perception, we do believe a friendly service definitely scores higher points to make customers feel comfortable and appreciated. After all, the restaurant provides a service and customers pay for it. Somehow, it is still basic necessity to be courteous even though the restaurant did not go for extra service.

To us, there's always a soft approach and hard ones to talk to customers and believe us, the tones used will definitely make a difference in the face expressions and satisfaction level of the customers.

A satisfied customer will be good reference to recommend the place to his/her friends to patron, ultimately doing free promotion and bringing more businesses. A dissatisfied customer can do otherwise which can affect the business in one way or another.

Customer loyalty depends on how good the restaurant do with customer retention approach. If politeness and friendliness are not the factors, then there must be something much much desired that can offset these factors...

    hi janice,

yes, Ben's diner is quite a nice place to dine on western food too, especially on their pork specialty dishes.

The last time we went there, the owner told us he sourced for the pork himself and used mostly imported ones.

The imprudence also pervades Sunway Tunas.
Very disheartening, yet the business is florishing despite the rudeness of the boss. Now, how to train the workers on good customer service levels when the boss is impertinent?

if the Anonymous | August 14, 2008 9:37 AM is one of the boss for these restaurant or in the F&B business... I wish and pray for the closure ceremony of your comapny if you are having that kind of perspective...

now is curtomer oriented.. dun get us wrong, we are customer, we pay for you.. we are the real boss OK?!!!

    Penang Gin Na

Just to reply your notes on Aug 15 2008 11:40pm.

I was a customer and had been treated with that impertinence and snubbed by the boss himself even though we ordered many tables.

Yes, I agree with you that we are the bill footers. We should have expected good service and courtesy for the "best customers" from them.

But, I can tell you most of today's hawkers and restaurant owners are not like those of half-century ago (fyi.. I am more than that vint-age).

Most hawkers now would not even look at your face when you place the orders. How rude! The irony is that they still have good business. Perhaps, this makes them imprudent and "no-hue" the customers.

Sorry, Penang TP.. I have to use the anonymous again to identify the reply to our Penang Gin Na.

Henceforth, I would stop using this nickname. You would know how naive I am in time...

    Hi Anonymous (Aug 17) :)

Thank you again for the inputs. Just to let you know you can always use a pseudonym or aliases if you don't feel comfortable with using real name as long as we can address you as an individual :)

We do agree as well the customer perception of hawkers and restaurateurs in general decline in recent years. People somehow "lost" the intelligence to be courteous and friendly...ie they can be literate but not necessarily educated.

Still, few bad apples do not necessarily spoil the whole barrel. We have encountered pleasant services in certain eateries in Penang like Ristorante Bella Italia at Belissa Row and Restoran Toipark Village in Prai just to name a few and we're sure they're many more :)

Maybe we should start a campaign next time, a state wide campaign for a start to improve the standard of penang food.. service with a smile :)
