Most of the asam laksa stalls in Penang these days are sold by Chinese and typically the asam laksa sold included prawn paste to make it sweet.

With the exception for lemak laksa of course, you will unlikely to find any asam laksa without prawn paste. Still, there are some laksa that do not put prawn paste and one of them can be found behind the Giant supermarket at Burmah road (to be exact it is at end of Bawasah Road).

The laksa is not sold in a stall but rather on a motorcycle which is parked outside One Corner Café, where the famous hokkien mee is located.

This laksa is sold by an Indian owner who used to sell it a tricycle, moving from house to house until some years ago chose to be stationary at the present location.

This laksa tasted sour and spicy unlike the Chinese one which is sweet because of added prawn paste. If you like spicy and sour, you will likely to find this type of laksa to your liking. The laksa gravy is not that thick and looks more like curry gravy at the first glance.

Besides laksa, the owner also sells fried popiah and fried beancurd (tau kuah chien) and varieties of kuih like kuih talam and curry puff. We also noticed on surrounding tables that some customers ordered only fried popiah and fried beancurd with the laksa gravy, minus the noodles.

We did order one as well as and they did taste quite nice, the taste of fried popiah soaked into laksa gravy, crunchy and yet moist too.

Used to buy the fried popiah when he was selling it on his motorcyle at the back door of Giant but never patronize him since he shifted. Will try having it dip in laksa.

This man is a Penang legend! He should be honoured at the upcoming celebrations for Penang's UNESCO heritage listing!

The laksa this owner sells somehow brings some nostalgic values to us as well. and the type of laksa he sells is different. Why is why we want to tell a brief story about his laksa.

Started on a tricyle and then upgrade to a motorbike, will he eventually upgrade to a minivan or perhaps a shoplot? :)

wow, little inbox can cook own laksa... remember to share with us your recipe.

hey, they used to sell it behind the Giant Supermarket (used to call it Fima). Then they moved over to a former funeral parlour place, now that place is collecting re-cycle items for re-cycle used.

Wow, you have a really great food blog! I used to gorge on this uncle's laksa when I was craving for some laksa with a difference. Dipping the popiah in the laksa soup was the best!

Hmm... I missed his laksa now ever since getting myself stuck to the computer most of the time.. haha. I used to have all the cucur udang etc soaked in the laksa soup. It's delicious.

I missed having my auntie's laksa where she will put in the mackerel I caught and flower crab meat into the assam lemak soup. Why must she move to KL :(

    MyF,

We tried this place during lunch time, never tried during evening. So it's safer to go during lunch. Didn't ask the uncle then...
